3 to 2 vs. 6 to 5 Blackjack Payouts: The Full Arithmetic
Of every rule printed on a blackjack layout, the payout on a natural moves the most money, and it is the one the fewest players read.
The short answer
- The cut: a natural returns 1.2 units instead of 1.5. The pay cut is 0.3 times your wager, every time.
- The cost: 1.36 percentage points in a six-deck game, 1.39 in single deck, once the dealer-push correction is applied.
- It is not just the payout: New Jersey treats 6 to 5 as a separate variation that also forces hit soft 17, removes surrender, permits killing double-after-split and strips the bonus payouts. The total lands near 2.14 percent.
- It is not banned: Nevada Regulation 5.012 requires only that the payoff be posted, accurate and not misleading. Disclosure, not prohibition.
- The habit: read the natural payout yourself, inside the game, before every session.
The Difference on a Single Hand
Start with the smallest unit the rule touches. Everything else on this page is this one number multiplied by how often the hand arrives.
This page derives the cost from first principles rather than repeating a figure, then applies it to real session volumes at a table and on a screen. If you are choosing where to play legal blackjack, the paytable is the first thing to check and the cheapest thing to get right.
A natural is an ace paired with any card worth 10 points, dealt as your first two cards. New Jersey’s rulebook uses exactly that definition. Every other winning hand pays 1 to 1; the natural is the only hand that pays a premium. At 3 to 2 the premium is half your bet. At 6 to 5 it is one fifth.

The tell in the chip tray
Because 6 to 5 on an odd bet produces fractions a chip tray cannot make, New Jersey requires all wagers at the 6 to 5 variation to be in multiples of $5. A $5 betting increment on a low-minimum table is a hint about the paytable before you have read a word of it.
Deriving the Cost, Step by Step
Three steps get you from the composition of a shoe to a number in percentage points. The second step is the one most write-ups skip.
Step 1: How Often a Natural Arrives
A six-deck shoe holds 312 cards, 24 aces and 96 cards worth 10 points. The chance the first card is an ace and the second a 10 is 24/312 times 96/311. The reverse order is equally likely, so double it: 2 x (24/312) x (96/311) = 0.047489, or 4.7489 percent.

Fewer decks means slightly more naturals, because pulling your ace out of 52 cards raises the concentration of 10s more sharply than pulling it out of 416.
Step 2: How Often It Actually Gets Paid
Most write-ups skip this step, and it moves the answer. When you hold a natural and the dealer holds one too, the hand pushes and the payout rule is never exercised, so the correct multiplier is the chance of a natural the dealer does not match. Holding an ace and a 10 from a six-deck shoe leaves 310 cards, 23 aces and 95 tens, so the dealer’s chance is 2 x (23/310) x (95/309) = 0.045620. That gives 0.047489 x (1 – 0.045620) = 0.045323, or 4.5323 percent.

Step 3: Multiply
Three to two returns 1.5 units per unit wagered; 6 to 5 returns 1.2. The gap is 0.3 units regardless of stake or deck count. So the cost in percentage points is 0.3 times the paid-natural frequency. For six decks: 0.3 x 0.045323 = 0.013597, or 1.36 percentage points. Run that across every payout you might meet on a felt and you get the full ladder.

All figures are percentage points added to the house edge. Basic strategy does not change when only the payout changes, so these add cleanly to whatever the rest of the rules produce.
Why the Quoted Figure Is Usually 1.39
Look at the first column. The familiar 1.39 is the single-deck answer, which is no accident: 6 to 5 spread on single-deck tables first, so that number entered circulation and has been repeated ever since for shoe games where the true cost is 1.36. A rougher check gets close too. Ignore the push correction, use 4.8 percent, and 0.048 x 0.3 = 1.44 points, which overstates the cost by about a tenth of a point because it counts naturals that push.
Why 1.4 Points Is Bigger Than It Sounds
A point and a half sounds like rounding error until you put it beside the edge it is added to, and beside every other rule on the layout.
A well-dealt 3 to 2 shoe game with liberal rules and correct basic strategy runs near half a percent. Start at 0.50, add 1.36, and you finish at 1.86 percent, which is 3.7 times the original edge, produced by one line of text on a placard. Six to five costs more than every other listed rule combined
Add every other row in that table and the payout still wins. That is also what makes the single-deck pitch work: going from six decks to one is worth about half a point to you while the payout takes 1.39 back, a trade of roughly three to one against you, presented as a favor.
The rows above are standard approximate values from published combinatorial analysis, shifting by a hundredth or two depending on the base game, which is close enough to rank them.

A 6 to 5 Table Usually Takes More Than the Payout
The 1.36 figure assumes nothing else changes, and something else almost always does. A 6 to 5 table is not a 3 to 2 table with a smaller natural.
In New Jersey you can read the stacking directly in Chapter 69F, which treats 6 to 5 as a separate variation with its own restrictions.
Standard blackjack table
- The natural pays 3 to 2.
- The casino may have the dealer hit or stand on soft 17. The table gets to choose.
- Surrender may be offered at the casino’s discretion.
- Doubling down after splitting pairs is available.
- Optional bonus payouts are permitted: suited 6-7-8 at 2 to 1, three sevens at 3 to 2 and five cards totaling 21 at 2 to 1.
- No special restriction on the size of your wager.
The 6 to 5 variation
- The natural pays 6 to 5.
- Hitting soft 17 is mandatory. That choice is taken away, in the direction that costs you.
- The surrender option shall not be available.
- A casino licensee may prohibit doubling down after splitting pairs.
- The suited 6-7-8, three sevens and five-card 21 bonus payouts are all expressly unavailable.
- All wagers must be in multiples of $5.
The citations behind that comparison, in the order they appear in the code:
- N.J.A.C. 13:69F-2.3(e) sets the payout. Wagers pay 1 to 1 “with the exception of standard blackjack which shall be paid at odds of 3 to 2, or at odds of 6 to 5 for the 6 to 5 blackjack variation.”
- 13:69F-2.12(d) makes hitting soft 17 mandatory: the dealer draws “until he or she has a hard total of 17 or a hard or soft total of 18, 19, 20, or 21.” Subsection (b) lets a standard table choose either way. On a 6 to 5 table the choice is gone, in the direction that costs you.
- 13:69F-2.8(c) removes surrender: the option may be offered at the casino’s discretion “except that … on any blackjack table which offers the 6 to 5 blackjack variation … the surrender option shall not be available.”
- 13:69F-2.10(d) permits killing double-after-split: “In the 6 to 5 blackjack variation, a casino licensee may prohibit doubling down after splitting pairs.”
- 13:69F-2.3(e) also strips the optional bonus payouts. Suited 6-7-8 at 2 to 1, three sevens at 3 to 2 and five cards totaling 21 at 2 to 1 are all permitted at a standard table and all expressly unavailable in the 6 to 5 variation.
Stack them, starting from a liberal six-deck game.

That is about six times where you started. So 6 to 5 does not merely cost 1.4 points; it arrives bundled with the rules a casino wants but cannot sell separately. Compare whole rule sets, and read the sign: N.J.A.C. 13:69F-8.3 requires a licensee to post the rules in effect at the table, and to give a half hour of notice, an announcement to seated players and notice to the Division before changing them mid-shift.
What It Costs per Hour
Expected loss per hour is hands per hour times average bet times house edge, and nothing else. The only variable in dispute is speed.
Hands per hour varies most and no regulator publishes it, so treat these as planning estimates. A full table with seven players deals roughly 60 to 80 rounds an hour; heads-up it can reach 200. Software has no dealing at all, so a focused player clears 250 to 400. A streamed live table is the slowest online format because the betting window is fixed, typically 45 to 60 rounds. The table uses 0.50 percent for a good 3 to 2 game and 1.86 percent for the same game at 6 to 5.

Speed matters as much as stake
Five-dollar hands played 300 times an hour cost more than $25 hands played 50 times an hour, worth knowing before you set a budget on a phone app. And the surcharge for 6 to 5 runs close to three times the entire cost of the good game.
Licensed sites must offer deposit and loss caps, and setting them in advance takes a minute.

Where 6 to 5 Came From, and Where It Lives
The rule moved down the bet-size range rather than up, and one regulator wrote the reason into a document.
The rule appeared in Las Vegas in the early 2000s on single-deck tables, inverting a familiar pitch. Players had spent decades being told fewer decks is better, and single-deck 6 to 5 let a casino advertise exactly that while removing something worth three times as much.
The first table is not settled
Trade accounts place the first tables at the Flamingo and date them to either August 2002 or 2003. The sources disagree and we could not settle it against a primary record, so treat the casino and year as reported rather than established.
The direction it spread is not in dispute. It moved down the bet-size range, not up: onto low-minimum tables, where the marginal player is least likely to know what a natural should pay and least likely to have an affordable alternative. It stays off high-limit tables, where customers would walk. Recent coverage describes 6 to 5 as standard on the Strip’s low-minimum shoe games and true 3 to 2 single deck as gone from the city. No regulator publishes payout-by-table data, so every prevalence figure in circulation comes from a private hand count.
New Jersey Put the Pattern in Writing
The clearest evidence that the low-limit pattern is deliberate is that a regulator once codified it. On Aug. 21, 2024 the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement approved a test, requested on behalf of the Casino Association of New Jersey, allowing 6 to 5 on shoe-dealt blackjack. The conditions are the interesting part.
Low-minimum tables only
Permitted only at tables with a $25 or less minimum bet.
Half the floor at most
No more than 50 percent of the blackjack tables open on a floor.
Eight decks maximum
No more than eight decks in the shoe.
Posted twice
The odds on a placard beside the min-max placard and on the layout, reading “Blackjack Pay 6-5.”

A report from each casino by Jan. 10, 2025 comparing the hold percentage of its 6 to 5 tables against its 3 to 2 tables.
A fixed window
From 12:01 a.m. Sept. 1, 2024 through 11:59 p.m. Jan. 2, 2025.
The letter confirms that hand-dealt 6 to 5 was already permitted year-round under N.J.A.C. 13:69E-1.19(b)(2). We could not verify whether the shoe test was extended past Jan. 2, 2025 or what the hold comparison showed, so check the table rather than assuming. That any of this is on the record follows from how the state regulator handles game approvals.
Nevada Never Had to Approve Anything
Cutting the payout does not create a new game, so Nevada triggers no approval. What it requires is disclosure. Nevada Gaming Commission Regulation 5.012, “Publication of payoffs,” provides that payoff schedules “applicable to every licensed game or slot machine shall be displayed at all times either on the table or machine or in a conspicuous place immediately adjacent thereto,” must “accurately state actual payoffs,” must not mislead the public, and that failing to pay in strict accordance with a posted schedule “may be deemed an unsuitable method of operation.”
The rule is disclosed, not prohibited
Six to five is not hidden. It is on the felt, legally required to be on the felt, and a licensee can be disciplined for getting it wrong. It spread anyway, because disclosure only protects a player who reads.

The regulators behind the paytable
Two states did most of the record-keeping quoted on this page. Here is how each one works.
Online: What the Paytable Is, and How to Check
At a licensed United States site the paytable is not a matter of trust, because it is filed and approved before the game goes live.
Most software blackjack in regulated states pays 3 to 2. The titles that do not are disproportionately single-deck and “single hand” branded variants, the same logic that put the rule on Vegas felt. We could not verify a title-by-title census against a primary source, so treat that as a pattern to watch for rather than a list. The obligation is verifiable, though: under N.J.A.C. 13:69O-1.5(m) a server-based table game must “function in accordance with approved rules for its corresponding authorized non-electronic table game,” must conspicuously indicate minimum and maximum wagers, and must “contain help screens that provide information and rules regarding approved variations, such as the number of decks used, special odds, and supplemental wagers.” Deck count and payout odds are required contents of that screen. Streamed tables overwhelmingly pay 3 to 2, and New Jersey classifies them as table game simulcasting. N.J.A.C. 13:69O-1.6(c) requires real-time information matching the physical equivalent, including the number of decks and, at item 8, the payout odds. Subsection (d) requires that “game play and payout rules, which shall not rely on sound to convey their meaning,” be available before you begin and throughout play, so a live table cannot bury the payout in a dealer’s patter. Read the felt
Check the video feed or the game art. The payout is printed on the layout in nearly every case.
Open the rules panel
Usually an “i” or a question mark in a corner. Regulated software must carry one.
Find four items
The natural payout, the deck count, whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, and whether doubling after a split is allowed.
Check the table name
“Single deck,” “single hand,” “speed” and “classic” all appear on tables that differ from the standard paytable.
If it is not stated, do not play
At a licensed site the payout is required to be there, so its absence tells you about the site.
Silence is an answer
That last point belongs with the other warning signs of a site worth avoiding. An operator that will not say what a hand pays has already answered the question.

Payouts Worse Than 6 to 5
Six to five is not the floor. Three worse rungs exist, and one of them is the variation players consistently underprice.
Seven to five
Turns up as a middle option and costs about 0.45 points in a six-deck game, roughly what hitting soft 17 costs. Still worse than any 3 to 2 game you could walk to instead.
Even money
On a natural, costs about 2.27 points. Almost no straight table does this because it is too obvious; you meet it inside a variant that gives something showy back. Blackjack Switch, which lets you swap the second card between two hands, pays naturals even money and pushes on a dealer hard 22 to claw the value back.
A natural that only pushes
Here for calibration. Forfeiting the full 1.5 units about 4.53 percent of the time would cost roughly 6.8 points in a six-deck game. That is the ceiling on what tampering with this one rule can do.
A Dealer 22 That Pushes
This is the variation players consistently underprice, because the intuition that the dealer still busted is exactly backwards. Here is the dealer’s final-total distribution, computed under an infinite-deck approximation with the dealer hitting soft 17 and playing every hand out.

About one dealer bust in four is a bust with exactly 22. A push-22 rule turns every one of those from a win into a tie for each player still holding a live hand. Since a basic-strategy player busts on roughly one hand in six, that is on the order of 6 percentage points of pure conversion, running higher once doubled and split hands carrying more than one unit are counted. Call it 6 to 7 points, four to five times what 6 to 5 costs.
Games built on it have to give a great deal back. New Jersey’s temporary rules for Free Bet Blackjack require the layout to read “Dealer Must Hit Soft 17 and Will Push with a Total of 22,” “Free Splits On All Pairs, Except 10-Value Cards” and “Free Doubles on Hard 9, 10 and 11 (First Two Cards Only),” and the natural still pays 3 to 2. The giveaways are what make the game playable; the net edge lands near 1 percent. When a variant hands you something generous, find what it took.
The Practical Rule, With Numbers
The corollary is the useful part, because it reverses how most players pick a table.
A higher-minimum 3 to 2 table is usually cheaper per hour than a lower-minimum 6 to 5 table
Never sit at a 6 to 5 table when a 3 to 2 table is available at a stake you can afford. Then remember that the cheaper table is often the one with the bigger number on the placard.
At 70 hands an hour, a $10 bet at 6 to 5 in a 1.86 percent game puts $700 through the table and costs $13.02. A $25 bet at 3 to 2 in a 0.50 percent game puts $1,750 through and costs $8.75. You are betting two and a half times as much per hand and losing a third less per hour. Memorize the break-even: since 1.86 divided by 0.50 is 3.72, you can bet up to 3.72 times as much at the good table before the hourly costs match.

Two caveats keep this from being a license to bet bigger than you should
Expected loss is not risk of ruin: a $50 bet swings a bankroll far harder hand to hand than a $10 bet even when the long-run cost is lower, so a $200 bankroll cannot sit at a $50 table whatever the rules say. And the comparison only holds at equal hand counts.
When the stakes really are out of reach, the alternative is not the 6 to 5 table across the aisle. It is a smaller table elsewhere, or a licensed online game, where minimums start well below anything a physical floor will spread. That is the practical case for real money play at a licensed site, and the state-by-state guide shows whether that option exists where you are.
Payouts and Side Bets Are Where Table Hold Comes From
Put the theoretical edge beside what casinos keep and the gap is startling. There is no contradiction in it, but there is an explanation.
Those figures come from the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s monthly revenue report. Blackjack is the largest table game by unit count.
Nearly 13 percent, against a house edge that should be under 2 percent even at a bad table. There is no contradiction. That 12.88 percent is win divided by drop, and drop is not the amount wagered; it is cash and markers exchanged for chips at the table. A player who buys in for $200 and plays 70 hands at $10 wagers $700 against a $200 drop, so the same dollar is bet and rebet several times over. Casinos measure against buy-in because that is what they can count; the house edge is measured against handle.
Three things push hold up inside that gap: how long a buy-in is recycled, how much action goes into side bets carrying edges of 2 to 15 percent or worse, and whether the base game pays 3 to 2 or 6 to 5. Side bets and the payout rule work in the same direction and compound. A player making a $10 main bet with a $5 side bet at a 6 to 5 table is paying more per hand on the small wager than on the large one, which is the design. None of it is cheating and none of it is hidden, which is the point the fair play section keeps returning to.
Assumptions Behind Every Number Here
Every figure above rests on a stated assumption. Here they are, so you can check the arithmetic against your own game.
- Natural frequencies come from a full, freshly shuffled shoe, counting ace-then-10 and 10-then-ace separately. Mid-shoe frequencies drift with composition, which is the basis of counting; the legal status of that is on card counting and the law, and how deeply a shoe is dealt is on shuffling and penetration. An online RNG game reshuffles every hand, so the fresh-shoe figure is exact there.
- The paid-natural frequency assumes a peek game, where a player natural pushes against a dealer natural. Every payout cost in the ladder uses the paid figure.
- Payout costs assume basic strategy is unchanged by the payout, which is correct: the natural resolves before you act.
- The dealer distribution is exact under an infinite-deck approximation, dealer hitting soft 17 and playing every hand out. Finite shoes shift it by hundredths of a point.
- The 0.50 percent reference edge stands in for a good six-deck 3 to 2 game played correctly. Strategy errors cost more than most rule variations do.

What you can now do with any figure you meet
If a source gives you a payout cost without stating the deck count and whether it accounts for the dealer push, you now know enough to work out which figure it copied.
